Building a successful web site is somewhat like building a new house:

1. Start with a stable foundation;
2. Build up a stout framework;
3. Construct it with good materials;
4. Apply the final cosmetic touches;
5. Move in and let people know you are there;
6. Maintain your house so things work well and people will want to visit.

Building a stable foundation means preparing a web site plan and choosing a good domain name. A good site hosting plan provides the framework, and well-designed text and graphics flesh it out. A neat presentation and navigation scheme round out the visual aspects, while a good marketing plan let's people know your site is available. Periodically freshening your site and staying on top of problems will keep people coming back.
