Myth: "I Will Get Traffic the First Day"

A few years ago, a TV commercial showed a group of people activating a new web site - and within minutes, their "hit counter" racks up thousands of visits! Sadly, this is classic marketing fiction: People won't visit your site until they know it is there, and they won't know that unless you market your site! This means you need to submit your site to search engines and directories, and establish reciprocal links with other sites. Also, you need to do external things such as print your website's URL (address) on stationery, business cards, brochures and so forth.

Another sad reality: After submitting your site to the search engines, it can take as long as six months before your site is listed! So why not just submit the site to the search engines and directories before it is up and running? Simple: The search engines send spiders (automated programs) or human reviewers to visit your site, and if they can't find it they will reject your submission.

So it is near impossible for outside visitors to find your web site on the first day. Fortunately, traffic will gradually ramp up over the course of the first few months IF you have been diligent about marketing your web site as soon as it is available.

Do your marketing, have patience, you will eventually see substantial traffic move through your new web site.
